Alliance universities’ excellence reflected at THE Awards

Four Alliance universities took home top prizes at the prestigious Times Higher Education Awards last night.

The annual awards, described by host Rory Bremner as the ‘Oscars of higher education’, celebrate innovation, excellence and impact across the sector.

Coventry University picked up the flagship title of University of the Year at the ceremony in London.

Judges praised the institution for its pioneering approach and being willing to take risks to help its students succeed and access higher education, citing the establishment of Coventry University College as a notable example.

This recognition comes after Coventry was named Modern University of the Year for the third time in a row by The Times and Sunday Times Good University Guide 2016.

The Outstanding Employer Engagement Initiative Award went to the University of Portsmouth for its work with Hampshire Police.

UWE Bristol picked up the Outstanding International Student Strategy Award while the University of Huddersfield, which was University of the Year in 2013, took home the Outstanding Contribution to Leadership Development Award.

Maddalaine Ansell, Chief Executive of University Alliance, said:

“We are delighted for our universities whose excellence and achievements have been recognised at THE Awards. Many congratulations to all those whose hard work has been rewarded.

“Our institutions aspire to make the difference in everything we do, delivering high-quality teaching and research, transforming lives and delivering growth and innovation across our cities and regions.

“This latest success – coming after Alliance universities’ recent recognition in the prestigious Queen’s Anniversary Prizes – demonstrates that we are institutions whose time has come, leading the way in the sector.”
