University Alliance comments on new international student migration data and announcement of official review

Commenting on the publication of international student migration reports by the Office of National Statistics and the Home Office, and on the UK government’s announcement of a full assessment of the impact of international students in the UK, University Alliance Chair Professor John Latham said:

“We are pleased that the Home Office and the Office for National Statistics have improved the evidence base on international student migration. The reports published today clearly show that both universities and international students are highly compliant with relevant visa regulations. These students put their trust in the high quality of UK higher education, and can be trusted in return not to overstay.

“We also welcome the announcement that the Migration Advisory Committee will assess the overall impact of international students in the UK. Alliance universities attract students from around the globe, with courses closely aligned to the needs of industry. International students benefit hugely from their education here, while also supporting local economies and enriching the experience of UK students. On their return home, they form a global network of people connected to the UK which will become even more crucial following Brexit. We look forward to demonstrating these benefits to the Migration Advisory Committee as they conduct their review.”
