With more than 31,000 students, Sheffield Hallam is one of the UK’s largest universities. We offer exceptional teaching and research in areas of national and international priority. Our graduates go on to secure careers and provide leadership in vital professions.
Above all, Sheffield Hallam aims to make a difference. We are interested in practical solutions to complex real-world challenges.
This applied focus informs our teaching, which includes professions such as engineering, science, nursing and business, as well as teacher education, art, law and paramedic practice. It makes our teaching in subjects such as mathematics, history, English and sociology, particularly distinctive, with a strong emphasis on preparing our graduates for success in employment.
It also drives our world-leading research across a broad spectrum of disciplines, in areas as diverse as science, sport, social science, arts and engineering. Our research excellence is now ranked in the top five of all UK modern universities, moving up 25 places in the UK’s most recent Research Excellence Framework.
Sheffield Hallam researchers are currently exploring the potential for physical exercise as a new treatment for prostate cancer; they are working with the police on new fingerprint technology; they are examining the impact of welfare reform on communities, helping to shape national policy.
Our sports scientists delivered research and technologies which directly supported Team GB athletes in winning 42 of their 67 medals at the Rio 2016 Olympic Games. They also worked with stars such as 2016 Masters golf champion Danny Willett – helping to make that crucial difference they needed to come out top.
We are a thriving international community with students and staff from more than 120 countries. Sheffield Hallam has a number of established transnational education (TNE) agreements with University-supported courses currently being delivered in Hong Kong, China, Malaysia and Botswana. Sheffield Hallam has offices in Malaysia, India, Pakistan, China and Nigeria to support international students as they prepare to begin their studies in Sheffield and with our TNE partners.
We have exchange agreements with more than 100 educational institutions worldwide. As a result of these partnerships, many of our students spend part of their degree studying in countries including Australia, India, Spain, Estonia, Finland, Malaysia, Sweden and Canada. For study and work placements in Europe, we are a recognised institution in the Erasmus+ exchange programme.
We shape the skyline of Sheffield – one of the UK’s largest cities. This year we have completed our £30 million flagship Charles Street building at City Campus, which is home to the Sheffield Institute of Education. And the Sheffield Institute for Arts has taken up residence in the restored one hundred year old Head Post Office, providing a stunning creative space and a new cultural hub for Sheffield and the wider region.
Our £14 million Advanced Wellbeing Research Centre (AWRC) is also in development. Situated at the heart of the Olympic Legacy Park in the east end of Sheffield, it will be the most advanced centre for researching physical activity in the world, creating ‘innovations that help people move’, tackling the key global issues of static levels of physical activity and rising obesity.
With exciting plans for the future, new leadership and a renewed focus upon playing a leading role both globally and within the wider city region, the University is looking forward to an even brighter future as the UK’s leading applied university.
