Origins of the University date back to 1913. Excellent RAE 2008 results with eleven centres of excellence undertaking ‘world-leading’ research. English, History, Engineering, Built Environment, Nursing, Social Policy and Computing performed particularly well. Electronic Product Engineering within the Faculty of Advanced Technology, and Environmental Technology and Management, have been designated Centres of Expertise for the whole of Wales.

Received the highest possible rating in its 2008 Quality Assurance Agency (QAA) inspection. The only UK university to achieve the ISO14001 award for environmental management. £130 million capital programme, including ATRiuM (a landmark campus at the heart of Cardiff city centre), new state-of-the-art science laboratories at Glyntaff and a new iconic Students’ Union building at Treforest.

In 2009 the University opened brand new facilities for its Faculty of Health, Sport and Science students and is currently developing a £3m sports facility as well as an on-campus aircraft hangar complete with its own aircraft. In 2010 a brand new Students’ Union building will open on the Treforest campus and will be followed by modern halls of residence. First prize on three occasions in the National Partnership Awards for excellence in course design and teaching ability.
