The origins of the university date back to 1843. One of the top ten universities in England and Wales for graduate employment with nearly 95% of its students in employment or further study six months after graduating. It also has the third highest number of year-long placements in the UK through its working partnerships with more than 6,000 businesses and private sector organisations around the world. The latest RAE results for NTU highlighted the quality of its research, with 74% classed as international status or world-leading. It has achieved a 55% increase in research income from 2002/03 to 2008/09, including a record £7.65 million to fund the development of a state-of-the-art Cancer Research Centre. Recognised as the top university for environmental management and performance, ranking 1st in the 2009 People and Planet Green League. Has had the highest growth in undergraduate applications out of any university in the UK (2008). Has invested £130 million in its estate in the last six years. 2010 saw the opening of the university’s flagship Newton and Arkwright regeneration scheme, based in the City campus.
