The University of Portsmouth is a leading modern university with a strong reputation for teaching and research. Many of our academics are international leaders in their fields and our students learn from experts who are pushing forward the boundaries of knowledge.
Our 19 000 students, including 3 000 from over 100 countries, are supported by over 3000 staff. We offer superb facilities in a vibrant waterfront location – a university by the sea but in the heart of one of Britain’s most historic cities. The main Guildhall campus, dotted around the city centre, has undergone extensive redevelopment with the establishment of a University Quarter.
The foundations of the University of Portsmouth extend back over 100 years to the Portsmouth Municipal College established in 1908. Portsmouth is in the national top ten for research quality for Applied Mathematics, Allied Health Professions and Studies and European Studies. Forty per cent of research was rated internationally excellent or world-leading and 78 per cent rated internationally recognised or above (2008 RAE). It received a 13 per cent increase in research funding following success in the RAE, against a sector average of 8 per cent.
In the 2009 National Student Survey Portsmouth received an overall satisfaction level of 85 per cent, within the top 25 per cent of English universities. It has an excellent teaching record, receiving the highest possible rating in the most recent Quality Assurance Agency audit. The University has good links with industry and a strong record of student employability. It’s recruitment agency, Purple Door Careers and Recruitment, offers a wide range of careers resources, skills workshops, careers guidance and employer events to support students and graduates in gaining graduate employment. Our recruitment consultants work in collaboration with national and local businesses, charities and organisations to source graduate opportunities and help graduates at every step of the recruitment process.
