If we are serious about growing an innovation-led knowledge economy, the role of design needs to be better understood. With increasing emphasis on the value of interdisciplinary work, design is playing a more prominent role in driving new forms of working and is integral to the innovation process.

In collaboration with the Design Council, we are exploring the role of design in universities, across the innovation landscape and in the economy. We are seeking to better understand and articulate the interdisciplinary nature of design and the crucial role it plays in solving big challenges faced across society.

Drawing on a long and rich history, Alliance universities have significant strengths in design education and research and as such University Alliance is well placed to lead the exploration of these themes.

To begin exploring these themes we are collating think pieces to stimulate discussion and to inform our future work in this area.
