Universities are not just a part of the education system. They play a central role in driving economic growth, building society and growing future talent, research and innovation. We support the government’s aim to create a framework that encourages strong, sustainable, balanced growth. Universities are key pillars in this framework, working in partnership with businesses, small and large, driving innovation and enterprise. Despite current pressures we must not forget the massive public benefit of putting direct public investment into our universities. Higher education is an investment in the essential building blocks for an innovation-driven economy. It is the quality and scale of our universities – delivering highly skilled graduates, research and innovation – that will determine the future pattern of economic growth in the UK.
