Research-led Innovation

A world-class, dynamic and innovative research base

Innovation and the commercialising of research for real social and economic impact are key drivers of growth. Recent research has confirmed that innovation and high-tech approaches are the most likely to be successful in driving economic recovery and economic growth in the UK economy.

We need a system that is able to support excellence in different universities enabling us to fully utilise both research and innovation. In order to ensure limited public investment in research and science is used to the best effect it is essential to maintain the principle of funding excellent research, wherever it exists. Alliance universities have a proven record of research excellence with relevance to the UK economy.

The results of the 2008 Research Assessment Exercise (RAE) and subsequent funding decisions have confirmed the success of world-leading research undertaken in Alliance universities. These universities contribute valuable insights through peaks of world-class, excellent research and provide a research informed, academic and entrepreneurial learning environment for students.
