Oxford Brookes University
Carl enjoyed school as a place ‘for having fun with friends and getting up to general mischief’. Despite making little effort with his studies, he was placed in the middle to upper classes for subjects. But during his teenage years he become involved in crime and gangs, and eventually left school without sitting all of his GCSE. By 18, he was sent to prison.
There, Carl decided to turn his life around. He embarked on an Open University taster course as well as other qualifications as part of a scheme to help ex-prisoners to access higher education. On release, he enrolled at Oxford Brookes on their Business and Marketing Management degree – the first in his family to go to university – and graduated with a 2:1 in 2015. At the same time, he carried out motivational speaking in Oxfordshire-based schools.
Now a personal trainer, class instructor and public speaker, Carl has started his current business: Over 60 Exercise, which promote active ageing in the region and led to winning the top prize in a local business contest in June 2017.
