University Alliance comment on FutureLearn announcement

A partnership of UK universities, led by the Open University, is launching an online project which aims to challenge US universities that have dominated this emerging market. They will aim to give the public access to higher education courses via computers, tablets or smartphones.

In response to the FutureLearn announcement (14 December 2012) Libby Hackett, Chief Executive of University Alliance, said:

“This is an incredibly exciting and important step being made by The Open University to help ensure that the UK remains a leading global educator of choice. The key strengths of UK higher education are quality and choice, with a diverse range of outstanding universities that are transforming lives. FutureLearn will be able to capture that guaranteed quality whilst expanding choice even further, providing a common platform and high quality learning experience that is accessible to students around the world for free.

“Our recent University Vision report, What is your vision for universities, explored what universities might look like in 2025. Clearly technology is going to create radical shifts in the learning experience in most, if not all, universities. Alliance universities are taking the lead in developing new and enterprising ways of teaching, learning, researching and engaging with business. We are proud to support The Open University as they embark on this new endeavour and look forward to the UK’s full engagement in this market as it develops.”
