Research Fortnight: REF 2021: mission almost accomplished?

Tom Frostick, Policy and Programmes Manager (Research, Innovation and International) at University alliance has written a blog for Research Fortnight about what we can expect from the release of the final Research Excellence Framework guidelines.

“The environment and impact guidance, published by the councils in September, actually goes a long way towards the vision in the Stern review for a more rounded view of an institution. With the environment template bolstered at the unit of assessment level, the impact weighting increased and definitions broadened, and with the advent of interdisciplinary panel members and identifiers, it seems doubtful that we even need institutional-level assessment to fulfil Stern’s intentions in a later cycle. It has been suggested that this is something that might be taken up in the Knowledge Exchange Framework (KEF).”
