The DTA Rep Committee 21/22: We talk with you; We talk for you

During the unprecedented times last year the first DTA Rep committee (2020-21) really helped keep up the spirits of DTA researchers. Following the success and feedback from this committee, in October 2021 we were delighted to be appointed as the second ever DTA Rep committee!

The main difference for this year’s committee is that we each have specific roles and responsibilities. The aims of this are twofold:

  • To enhance the DTA Rep system as a training experience that enables us to each strengthen our skills in specific areas, such as leadership, communications, events management and mentorship
  • To allow us to more efficiently work as a remote nationwide team as we each know the tasks expected of us in order to contribute to the whole team

Over the 2021/22 year, we, your DTA Reps, will work with the DTA Team and Governance to help develop DTA programme activities. We will be in regular contact with DTA researchers over the year, and will welcome any feedback and suggestions.

To get in contact, connect with us on Twitter or Instagram, or send an email to dtareps@unialliance.ac.uk.

The DTA Rep Committee 21/22: We talk with you; We talk for you Chair: Udit Tiwari

Udit is a second-year Energy researcher at the University of Central Lancashire. He understands the unique concerns and the challenges facing  a PhD researcher during Covid times. As chair of the rep committee he will have lead responsibility for collating and communicating the experiences of his fellow researchers to the DTA team. In this role he will also have oversight of all committee activities through co-ordinating other committee members and chairing committee meetings; managing the DTARep email inbox and forwarding relevant emails to different committee members. He will also be Ex Officio member of DTA governance groups.

The DTA Rep Committee 21/22: We talk with you; We talk for you Representation Officer: Ruth Mandigo

She strives to ensure all researchers’ voices are heard. She believes in making sure the activities and trainings are tailor-made catering to the needs of DTA cohorts. Her role as a Representation Officer involves designing surveys that gather feedback and suggestions from DTA researchers, and then carrying out data analysis and providing summaries of key findings from surveys for use by other committee members and to pass onto the DTA Team.

Surya is a third-year Energy researcher at the University of Hertfordshire. Surya believes that the DTA programme can provide a strong sense of belonging during these lonely times. As Communications Officer she aims to create a strong social media presence (through Twitter, Instagram, and blogs – such as this one) for the DTA reps, and make it easier for Reps to reach out to fellow researchers and vice versa.  She also believes in encouraging more participation in DTA activities by making the event information more available using social media. Her responsibility for this role is to stay up to date with DTA and Rep committee events and surveys, working with other committee members to promote them on Rep social media channels.

The DTA Rep Committee 21/22: We talk with you; We talk for you Research Networking Officer: Elisa Pierella

She will also lead the design and delivery of the DTA Rep Careers Fair – this event was initiated by last year’s committee and we wish to replicate their success in 2022!
