Apprenticeships at the University of Brighton

University of Brighton apprenticeship programmes are educating the public sector workforces of tomorrow, as well as those in practice today. Their Higher and Degree Apprenticeships were introduced to offer alternative routes to qualification for professionals and they respond to industry needs by working with employers to create provision in areas of strong demand, at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels.

A recent Ofsted inspection highlighted the quality of Brighton’s teaching, learning and assessment, as well as outcomes for learners. Inspectors also praised the quality of placements, diversity and breadth of experience-sharing among the apprentices, and the way that student feedback informs teaching.

In Short:

  • The programmes engage learners from a diverse age range between 19 and 59 years.
  • They support social mobility by removing potential barriers to learning that might previously have prevented progression in many sectors.
  • The university offers apprenticeships across a range of sectors, including teaching, biomedical science, health care, social work, computing, and construction and the built environment – all areas where skills are needed to support the Grand Challenges of the Industrial Strategy.
  • New programmes are being developed and offered in civil engineering, chartered town planning, business, law, accounting, occupational therapy, podiatry, advanced clinical practice and nursing.

Ria French, who works in the HR team at HOP Consulting, said “Apprenticeships are integral to our business structure – all our apprentices on the technical side go through degree qualifications, and our model is based on training and development so our staff work their way up.”

Carla Butler, Apprenticeship Programme Manager, Brighton & Hove City Council also praised the programmes saying “The South East is very lucky to have such a forwarding-thinking university.”
