A guide to student finance

From 2012, a lot is changing about the way a university education is paid for.

The changes may seem big, but they needn’t be daunting, nor should they put anyone off going to university.

To help make it easier for people to understand the changes, Martin Lewis and the team at MoneySavingExpert.com have come up with a range of easy to understand guides and videos. We’ve posted them here along with the brilliant animation by Alliance member, Bournemouth University.

Student finance day, 14 November, 2011
Student Finance Day, on November 14, is a national day dedicated to explaining the 2012 changes to student finance in England. The main aim of the campaign is simple – to ensure people understand how the new student finance package works before they make a decision as to whether they can afford to go to university. The day is being organised by Martin Lewis alongside the National Association of Student Money Advisers (NASMA) and the Higher Education Liaison Officers Association (HELOA).

Repayment calculator

MoneySavingExpert.com designed this calculator to enable students to change the variables such as tuition fee level, maintenance loan level and likely starting salary, and get an idea of what they’ll pay back and for how long. If you play about with different amounts, you can see how much you can earn before you’re likely to pay back the full loan.
