Mind the gap: Engaging with employers in your region

University Alliance (UA) is collaborating with universities across the country to deliver a series of regional workshops exploring how to best support STEM-related employer engagement in higher education.

These events follow the recent publication of our research report, Mind the gap – engaging employers to secure the future of STEM in higher education.

They offer university staff with an interest in STEM and employer engagement the opportunity to come together and discuss the findings of Mind the Gap and how they relate to their own work.

Each event will also feature a series of case studies that showcase good practice in STEM-based employer engagement.  There will also be an interactive session run by the Higher Education Academy to introduce their Embedding Employability in Higher Education Framework.

Further details about the HEA session –  Engaging employers through the HEA Embedding Employability in Higher Education Framework

This part of the programme will be divided into two sections. The first will introduce participants to the underpinning rationale for the embedding employability in Higher Education framework. It will then highlight the challenges of engaging with employers and introduce a structured process that if adopted at an institutional level can act as a vehicle to support employer engagement across all disciplines, whilst being owned and shaped by the subject specialists within the institution which is a critical factor in relation to wider staff engagement. 

The second section is an interactive workshop to introduce you to the four stage process central to the HEA’s framework. This framework has been designed to support institutions in developing a more comprehensive, cohesive and consistent approach to employability by working collaboratively with all stakeholders. Launched in 2013 the framework has now been used by over fifty institutions across the UK and internationally. 

By participating in this session you will have the opportunity to reflect on your current provision and approaches to employability and employer engagement and consider how the HEA framework can help you to take your work in employability to the next level.
