Today (10 September) University Alliance welcomes the Science Minister Chris McDonald’s recognition that the current research funding system places too much administrative burden on researchers.
Vanessa Wilson, CEO of University Alliance, said:
“We welcome the Science Minister’s commitment to making the research funding system simpler and more effective. Researchers should be focused on solving society’s biggest challenges, not navigating unnecessary bureaucracy.
“Professional and technical universities already translate research into economic and social impact through close partnerships with employers, public services and local communities. Reducing administrative burdens and providing greater stability will help them accelerate innovation and growth.
“However, any move towards fewer, larger grants must not come at the expense of emerging researchers, regional partnerships, interdisciplinary collaboration or the diverse range of institutions that underpin the UK’s research strength. We are clear that the UK’s research strength lies in the diversity of its talent and institutions.
“University Alliance looks forward to collaborating with ministers and UKRI to create a funding system that is simpler, more effective and supports excellence wherever it is found.”
