Professor Peter Bonfield OBE FREng BSc MSc PhD CEng FIET is Vice-Chancellor and President of the University of Westminster where he is responsible for leading around 22,000 students and shaping their futures.
A materials engineer by training Peter was formerly Chief Executive Officer at BRE Group, having joined BRE as a research scientist in 1992. At BRE he positioned the company as an international leader in building research, forging a number of research and teaching partnerships with global universities.
Peter is currently Deputy Chair of the Board of London Higher and was previously Chair of the Board of Institute of Occupational Safety and Health from 2021-2024 and was President of the Institution of Engineering and Technology (IET) from 2019-2020.
Peter has worked with many government departments as a non-executive and expert on a wide range of briefs, including chairing four independent reviews for the Government, on Forests and Woodlands, Public Sector Food Procurement, Property Flood Resilience, and Energy Efficiency and Renewable Technologies. He is currently undertaking his fifth review on Flooding with the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs.
Between 2006 and 2012 he was part-time seconded into the Olympic Delivery Authority where he co-created and delivered the Sustainability Strategy and lead on the procurement of construction products.
Peter holds a number of awards, including an honorary doctor of engineering from the University of Bath and Hertfordshire University, and an honorary doctor of science from Loughborough University and Napier University.
In 2012 he was awarded an OBE from the Queen for services to research and innovation and in the same year was elected to the Royal Academy of Engineering, UK.
