University Alliance welcomes additional teacher training capacity

University Alliance has responded to the government’s provisional accreditation of an additional twelve teacher training providers.

Responding to the announcement, Vanessa Wilson, CEO of University Alliance, said:

I’m delighted that the government has granted twelve additional providers provisional accreditation to deliver teacher training from September. I’m particularly pleased that the list of provisionally accredited providers includes two University Alliance member universities, which I know can provide brilliant teacher training at scale.

The last government’s reforms to teacher training led to a ludicrous situation where universities rated ‘good’ or ‘outstanding’ by Ofsted for their teacher training lost their training accreditation, making it even harder to address the UK’s severe shortage of teachers. Thankfully, the government has now heeded our calls for a second opportunity for institutions to secure accreditation and this will be a vital step in meeting its target of recruiting an additional 6,500 teachers. I am glad that good sense has prevailed; this move will benefit children and communities across the country.

The previous government’s Initial Teacher Training Review led to a number of teacher training providers losing their training accreditation. University Alliance and other voices in the education sector expressed concerns at the time of the review about the impact it could have on the school sector.
