University of Westminster joins University Alliance

University Alliance (UA) and the University of Westminster are today (Tuesday 22 July 2025) pleased to announce that the University of Westminster has joined UA.

With a longstanding history of supporting students from diverse backgrounds to gain the high-level skills and knowledge that employers need, the University of Westminster aligns with University Alliance’s mission as a group of impactful professional and technical universities.

The addition of the University of Westminster will bring University Alliance’s membership to seventeen.

To become a member of University Alliance, potential new members are assessed against a range of measures to ensure they will be “like” and “likeminded,” united across collective missions and values. These include, for example, research, teaching excellence and knowledge exchange framework metrics; institution size, subject mix and student performance outcomes including NSS scores, B3 metrics (where relevant) and graduate outcomes.

Professor Peter Bonfield, Vice-Chancellor of the University of Westminster, said:

“I am pleased that we have been accepted to join the University Alliance – a mission group which represents members who deliver exceptional professional and technical education and have strong routes in industry. A positive step for us all, which recognises our practical history and connections to industry which so benefit our students. We look forward to contributing to and being part of this active community.”

Professor Jane Harrington, Chair of University Alliance and Vice-Chancellor of the University of Greenwich, said:

“We’re delighted to welcome the University of Westminster to the Alliance. The university has all the ingredients of an excellent professional and technical university: innovative and applied teaching, strong partnerships with employers and impactful research.

As the government begins to deliver its industrial strategy, professional and technical universities will need to work together to ensure we are at the heart of that, utilising our strong industry links and the applied nature of our research and teaching to drive forward the UK’s growth sectors.

As our numbers grow, so too does the power of our collaboration as an Alliance and I am excited about what we will achieve in the coming years.”

Vanessa Wilson, CEO of University Alliance, said:

“The University of Westminster will be a great addition to the University Alliance family. Delivering excellent professional and technical education for almost 200 years in central London, they are exemplary of our collective mission and vision for what professional and technical universities deliver for students, industry and the economy. I’m looking forward to onboarding colleagues right across the university into the work of our mission group.”
