Vanessa Wilson, Chief Executive of University Alliance has responded to the British Social Attitudes Survey report on higher education by the National Centre for Social Research:

“The new report shows public perception of Higher Education is more nuanced than much of the current debate suggests. The British public aren’t turning against higher education – people still value access and opportunity – but confidence has been dented, particularly in terms of value. That should give pause to those who have been quick to talk down the sector as well as to those of us who advocate for it.

“The data suggests a risk that repeated doubt is hardening into public perception, with real consequences for aspiration and the talent pipeline the UK depends on. This narrative risks obscuring the well‑evidenced benefits of a degree, not only in higher lifetime earnings, but in improved wellbeing, greater life satisfaction and resilience in a changing labour market.”

“We need to be honest with young people considering their options; university offers distinctive long‑term personal economic and societal benefits compared to alternative paths. And the great thing about higher education is that the door to participation is open at any age.”
