University Alliance responds to the Prime Minister’s announcement of £1 billion in UKRI funding for regional innovation

Commenting on the Prime Minister’s announcement at the Innovation Nation Summit of £1 billion in UKRI funding for regional innovation over the next four years, Vanessa Wilson, CEO of University Alliance, said:

“The Prime Minister’s commitment to a more regional approach to research and innovation funding is welcome news for our members. Professional and technical universities are deeply rooted in their communities and already work with businesses, public services and local leaders to drive innovation, skills and economic growth. We were also pleased to hear the Prime Minister’s vision for universities as key partners in delivering growth in every postcode.

As the government takes forward its devolution agenda, we are keen to work with ministers to ensure every part of the country can benefit. However, there must be no devolution deserts. Access to regional funding and growth opportunities should not depend on whether an area has an existing mayoral structure. Every community needs a clear route to participate in, and benefit from, innovation-led growth.”
